Abstract
Ageism can be associated with an individual`s own attitude toward social discrimination. However, unlike racism, as marked by differences in racial background, ageism has not received much attention in public sense. The aim of this study was to seek the relationship between an individual`s welfare attitude and ageism. In particular, this study paid special attention to attitude towards welfare states, welfare responsibility, poverty responsibility, conflicts between interest groups, and income disparities. A sample of 1,000 participants was recruited using quota sampling. Survey participants were classified by age (under 65 vs. 65 & older). Trained interviewers asked participants a series of questions including welfare attitudes & ageism. Analyses including Multivariate regression were conducted using STATA 13.0. Results indicated that regardless of age, attitudes toward income disparities were significantly associated with ageism (p<.01). For the group under 65, welfare responsibility was significantly associated with ageism (p<.01). Practical implications & suggestions for future studies were discussed.
